Americans Face Sticker Shock: Health Insurance Premiums Become Unaffordable as Republicans in Congress Rip Away Key Tax Credits

Republicans are in control of Congress and the White House and are taking away key health care tax credits — driving up premiums for millions of Americans.

By the Numbers

Across the country, millions are paying more for coverage as key health care tax credits expire. Here’s what the data shows.

24,319,713 Americans

will pay an average of $627 more per year for coverage

4,800,000 Americans

will lose coverage entirely due to Republican-supported premium hikes

45-year-old earning $62,000

will see premiums rise by $1,469, totaling $6,739 annually

60-year-old couple earning $82,000

will see premiums rise by $18,361, totaling $25,331 annually

Family of four earning $126,000

will see premiums rise by $8,358, totaling $19,068 annually

U.S. hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers

will lose $32.1 billion in funding due to health care cuts Republicans voted for

Since taking control of Washington, President Trump and Republicans in Congress have failed to protect a key provision of the Affordable Care Act: tax credits for health care premiums. Lawmakers have known that without these protections, costs will go up even more — with health insurance premiums rising as much as 114% according to nonpartisan experts. Now, we’re seeing the result:

  • Premiums are rising across the country, more than doubling on average.
  • Millions are losing coverage altogether.
  • Hospitals and other providers are facing another wave of financial strain as a result of the 2025 tax bill passed by Republicans: $32.1 billion in funding lost next year to pay for tax cuts for the richest Americans.

Each day Republicans in Congress fail to address premium increases, more Americans are forced to choose between keeping a roof over their head, food on the table, or life-saving health care coverage.

The choice is clear: They can side with billionaires and corporate interests, or stand with hard-working Americans who deserve affordable health care.
